水産庁取締船「みはま」帰国の途に、豪州海軍艦船(また)故障

故障したHMAS Larrakia

*Israeli-made Rafael Typhoon stabilized 25-millimetre (0.98 in) gun mount fitted with a US-made M242 Bushmaster cannon.

*Two 12.7-millimetre (0.50 in) machine guns

* Bridgemaster E surface search/navigation radar,

*Prism III radar warning system,

*Toplite electro-optical detection system,

*Warrlock direction finding system.

A Japanese fishery surveillance vessel was in Palau for around two weeks to help the island nation monitor its waters.

A source disclosed that “Mihama” patrolled Palau’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) together with Palau’s PSS Remeliik patrol boat.

“The coming of the “Mihama” was under an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed earlier between the Palau and Japan governments,” he disclosed.

The source said that “Mihama” arrived in Palau two weeks ago. The ship left for Japan yesterday.

While here, the “Mihama” was involved in the rescue of seven fishermen from southern Philippines who drifted at sea for nearly three weeks before the rescue.

The “Mihama” is a patrol boat belonging to the Fisheries Agency of Japan. Built in 2001, the ship weighs 499 tons and is 64 meters in length.

The ship is tasked to monitor Japanese long line tuna fishing fleets to ensure they are not over fishing.

Island Times tried to contact the Japan Embassy in Palau to confirm the matter, but has not yet received a response as of press-time.

Meanwhile, the port visit of the Royal Australia navy patrol vessel HMAS Larrakia, which was supposed to arrive at the Malakal Port yesterday, was cancelled.

According to RAN Lieutenant Commander (LCDR) Alan Willmore, who is also a maritime surveillance advisor for Palau, he received an e-mail on Thursday, October 9, 2014 that the ship broke a propeller and will cancel its port visit to this island nation.

The HMAS Larrakia was supposed to come to Palau after a visit to the Philippines.

The port visit was supposed to be for logistical resupply while allowing opportunities for international engagement and respite.

Launched in 2006, the HMAS Larrakia belongs to the Armidale Class of patrol vessels and has a complement of more than 20 officers and enlisted men.

The ship comes equipped with Israeli-made Rafael Typhoon stabilized 25-millimetre (0.98 in) gun mount fitted with a US-made M242 Bushmaster cannon. Two 12.7-millimetre (0.50 in) machine guns are also carried.

The HMAS Larrakia is also equipped with Bridgemaster E surface search/navigation radar, Prism III radar warning system, Toplite electro-optical detection system, and Warrlock direction finding system.
