(10)Niseko, a Chinese colony (10)

Chinese colony, Niseko series. This is the last one.

On my first visit to Niseko, I was told by Kutchan Town Councilor Tanaka, whom I met for the first time, "It is already too late. It has already become a town of foreign investment." I chose this title because of his words.

Indeed, during my stay in Niseko, I did not come into contact with the culture and history of Niseko.
I first visited Hokkaido after reading Ryotaro Shiba's Okhotsk Road. I never felt any history or culture in the foreign capital of Niseko.

But Niseko has the footprints of the Jomon people and stone circles. There is also the pioneering history of Takeo Arishima. And there are potatoes so famous that they call themselves the Potato Republic... I didn't encounter any of these this time.

Development without residents. That is the town of Niseko today. Tanaka criticizes the developers as "free riders". The development of foreign capital is a free ride on the city's infrastructure. Not only that, but they are also placing new burdens on the city, such as the water supply. Foreigners without residency certificates are changing the town's landscape, creating sanctuaries that town residents are not allowed to enter.

I stopped in Hakodate on my way home to see the "Hollow Dogu Figure". It is the only national treasure in Hokkaido. Seventeen Jomon sites in Hokkaido and the northeastern part of Japan, including Hakodate, were registered as World Heritage sites on January 29, 2022.
The Hakodate Jomon Culture Exchange Center, where the national treasure "Hollow Dogu Figure" is located, is also covered with snow and is located in Minami-Kayabe overlooking the sea. Did the Jomon people also see this view? I wonder if they came to Niseko to pray at the Stone Circle with Mt. Yotei in the background, and to pick up nuts.
What would they think of Niseko today?

I thought again that only Jomon history could save Niseko from becoming a Chinese colony.

A curator talked to me.
"Were you able to take a picture of the hollow Dogu figurine?" He advised me how  to focus.

"I have seen how Niseko is becoming no longer Niseko. I think only the Jomon people can save this."

I said.

"There is same sense of urgency about this throughout Hokkaido."

I got a surprising answer.

"Niseko does not have any registered sites, but can you organize a conference on the Jomon?"

"I am sure we can work on that if requested."
