AUKUS: Australia to lease submarines to fill security gap

Amid concern the planned delivery of nuclear-powered submarines won’t begin until at least the late 2030s and leave Australia exposed to a capability gap, Defence Minister Peter Dutton said he had spoken to Biden defence officials about leasing the Virginia class boats and Australia would hold similar talks with Britain.
In a separate interview with The Australian Financial Review in Washington, Mr Dutton warned that China could launch further cyber attacks in retaliation to the AUKUS pact.
“I do think we should prepare for more aggressive behaviour from China after this,” Mr Dutton said.
“This is on an industrial scale, and it will, along with other grey zone tactics, continue to be a feature of the Chinese Communist Party approach.”
AUKUS also includes closer relations on long-range missiles, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and quantum computing.
The existing Collins class submarines were originally conceived in the 1980s, built in the 1990s and were due to expire by around the middle of this decade.
