サイパンの知事室に尋ねてみたが、濱田防衛大臣と知事は旧知の仲で会談は二人だけのプライベートな内容であった、という。これはますます安全保障上重要な会談だった可能性が高い。知事一向は日本に到着してすぐに駐日米国大使館のアラン・ターリー商務担当公使と打ち合わせをしている。地域の安全保障の話をしないわけがない。

実はサイパンの現状を私は一つ目の博士論文にも書いており結構知っている。なぜ、パラシオス知事は濱田防衛大臣との会談内容を、日本人との記者会見でポロッと話せて、島内では言わなかったのか？
私はサイパンの件を博論に書いただけではなく、ミクロネシアメディア協会設立を発案し動いた立場でもある。サイパンはカジノだけでなくメディアはじめ主幹産業は全て中国の手中にあるのだ。特に地元紙のSaipan Toribuneのオーナーは”あのTan Siu Linである。知事が中国批判を言えるわけないではないか。
そしてこの状況を作り出したのが90年代のHIS始めとした日本の旅行業界なのだ。これは次回。

I asked at the Governor's office in Saipan and was told that Defence Minister Hamada and the Governor are old acquaintances and that the meeting was private between the two. It is increasingly likely that this was an important security meeting. The Governor and his party had a meeting with Alan Turley, Minister of Commerce at the US Embassy in Japan, as soon as they arrived in Japan. There was no reason not to discuss regional security.

In fact, I know quite a bit about the current situation on Saipan, as I wrote about it in my first doctoral thesis. Why was Governor Palacios able to talk about the content of his meeting with Defence Minister Hamada at a press conference with the Japanese, but not inside the island?
I not only wrote about Saipan in my doctoral thesis, but also conceptualised and initiated the establishment of the Micronesian Media Association. Saipan is not only a casino, but the media and other key industries are all in China's hands. In particular, the local newspaper, the Saipan Toribune, is owned by Tan Siu Lin. How can a governor criticise China in front of Chinese owned media?
And it was the Japanese travel industry, including HIS in the 1990s, that created this situation. See next issue.
