For 10 years since the 1990s, I have organized the "Coonuts Collage" project in the Yaeyama Islands of Okinawa.
This project started with a project called "Talking about the Islands in the Islands".
In the beginning, I held the "Talk on the Islands" meetings on Amami Oshima, Sado Island, Hachijojima, and other islands on a rotating basis.
In the process, I started to cooperate with local media in the Yaeyama Islands (Ishigaki TV and Yaeyama Mainichi) through the introduction of Ms. Terumi Matsui, a reporter from Amami Oshima.
The course, which also included media exchange and a two-night, three-day field study, was led by them.
This project, held on a rotating basis on each island of the Yaeyama archipelago, was the impetus for Prime Minister Obuchi to propose the holding of the 2nd Island Summit in Okinawa in 2000 (although it actually ended up in Miyazaki, Kyushu).
The "Talking about Islands in the Islands" group came to the conclusion that we knew too little about the Pacific island countries, so we decided to disseminate information about the Pacific island countries on our web site.
This is the beginning of this blog, "Coconuts News".
The web site of Coconuts College was closed without my knowledge.
The 3rd (2003) and 4th (2006) Island Summits were also held in Okinawa, (re)strengthening the relationship between the Pacific island countries and Okinawa that continues to this day.

八重山諸島で９０年代から10年私が企画運営してきたのが「やしの実大学」事業である。
これは島で島を語る会、という事業をきっかけに開始したものだ。
当初は私は奄美大島、佐渡島、八丈島など持ち回りで「島で島を語る会」を開催した。
その中で、奄美大島の松井輝美記者の紹介で八重山諸島の地元メディア（石垣TV八重山毎日）と協力する事となった。
彼らを中心にメディア交流や２泊３日のフィールドスタディを兼ねた講座を開催した。
八重山諸島の各島持ち回りで開催したこの事業を一つのきっかけに小渕総理に2000年の第２回島サミット沖縄開催を（実際には九州宮崎になってしまったが）提案されたのである。
「島で島を語る会」では、私たちは余りにも太平洋島嶼国の事を知らない、という結論に達し、ウェッブで太平洋島嶼国情報を発信する事にした。
これが、このブログ、「やしの実通信」の始まりである。
やしの実大学のウェッブは当方の知らない間に閉鎖されてしまった。
第３回（2003年）と第４回（2006年）の島サミットも沖縄で開催され、今に続く太平洋島嶼国と沖縄の関係を（再）強化したのである。
