オニール政権の汚職を批判したパプアニューギニア大学の学生抗議運動が活発になり、１週間ほど前には学長の判断で大学は閉鎖されていた。
昨日、この学生と警察がぶつかったようで、死者４名、負傷者９名との情報がある。

６月９日付けの下記のニュースでは負傷者17名で死者はいない、とのこと。
また大学は学生の抗議活動に法的対処を取ることとした。
オニール首相は学生運動の背後にいるアジテーターの存在（政権野党）を調べるとコメントしている。

現在当方の友人がパプアニューギニアに入っているので、この問題は大学閉鎖辺りから耳に入っていた。学生が、もしくは野党が指摘する政権の「汚職」問題は常にある。ここまで展開した理由は何か？
天然資源に恵まれ、その開発も日本、豪州、米国と先進国の支援を受けて順調だったパプアニューギニアは2015年のGDP成長率が20％を超えると言われていた。周辺の太平洋島嶼国へ支援金を出す国家となった。
太平洋島嶼国で金銭的に一番豊かな国になったパプアニューギニア。900前後の言語をもつ一番豊かな文化的多様性に対応できなかったのかもしれない。
国父、ソマレ閣下が正式に政治からリタイアした直後の事件である。
４月にはソマレ閣下はオニールの退陣を呼びかけていた。

Sir Michael in a statement said: "It is inexcusable that unarmed students are fired upon by police as they prepare to peacefully march on to Parliament.
"We need to establish who gave the orders for policemen to inflict harm on unarmed students. What warranted police to surround the campus in the first instance?
“Is the University safeguarding the interest of our young people?
"I call on police to stand down in the interest of the public, you are not there to protect the interest of individual politicians.”
