Ni-Vanuatu （バヌアツ人のことはVanuatuanとは決して言わないように）の友人が
「チュチュガ虫で博論を書くのよ」
と言われ、もしや今のは日本語？と聞き返したら
「そうよ、日本の名前。日本ではドアの上に御呪いで貼ってあるそうよ」
チュチュガ虫は恙虫のことだ。私はそれまで聞いたこともなかった。外国人は「つ」が発音できず「ちゅ」になる。
「つつが」は607年、聖徳太子が中国皇帝に主権を主張した一文に出てくる恙である。
日出づる処の天子、書を日没する処の天子に致す。恙無きや、云々
ウェブサーチすると「つつが」は日本語古語で「病」「障害に合う」という意味。
つつむ、つつま、つつめ、つつみ と活用される。
Ni-Vanuatu の友人によると、バヌアツ、日本だけでなく広くアジアに生息しているという。
地図を検索したらインド太平洋に広く生息しているようだ。興味が湧いてきて医学書ではなく一般書がないか探したところ、あった。

My friend who is Ni-Vanuatu (never say Vanuatuan for People of Vanuatu) said;
'I'm writing a dissertation in Chuchuga mushi.'
I asked her if that was Japanese.
'Yes, the Japanese name. In Japan, they put them on the door as a curse.
Chuchuga-mushi is a tsutsugamushi. I had never heard of it before. Foreigners cannot pronounce the 'tsu' and it becomes 'chu'.
'Tsutsuga' is the word that appears in a sentence in 607, when Prince Shotoku asserted his sovereignty over the Emperor of China.
'The Prince of Heaven from where the sun rises and the letter is given to the Prince of Heaven from where the sun sets. I wish no Tsutsuga (illness)...
A web search reveals that tsutsuga is an archaic Japanese word meaning 'illness' or 'meeting with obstacles'.
It is also converted into tsutsumu, tsutsuma, tsutsume and tsutsumi.
According to my friends in Ni-Vanuatu, it is found not only in Vanuatu and Japan, but also widely in Asia.
A map search shows that it is widely found in the Indo-Pacific. My interest was piqued and I looked for a general book, not a medical book, and there it was.
