下記、バヌアツの知人が昨晩FBに上げた被害修復進捗の続報。
バヌアツの携帯電話ネットワーク、デジセルがバヌアツの北部も修復し、ほぼ国全体の通信ネットワークが復活した、との話。災害４日後の快挙。
デジセル、また歴史を作った。
多くの島を抱えるバヌアツ、他の太平洋島嶼国同様、離島への通信はあってなきがごとしだった。
各離島の１つか２つしかない郵便局に通信回線があり、村によっては１日、数日かけてそこまで行く必要があった。また到着しても回線が故障していたり、通話相手がいなかったり。
こんな状況が２００９年まで続いていた。
そこに現れたのが、デジセル。
Digicel。アイルランド生まれ、カリブ育ちの通信会社だ。
あっというまに、バヌアツの全離島にタワーを建てて、ユニバーサルサービスを完成させた。
それまで、ユニバなんて無理！と言っていたTVL(Telecom Vanuatu Limited、英仏共同統治の遺産的存在)も同様のサービスを展開し、競争が生まれている。
今回の災害で注目したいのは、デジセルは近隣のパプアニューギニア、フィジーでも業務を展開しているため、そこから支援の手が伸びた、という点だ。機材と人材がバヌアツに集まった。TVLも、また他のテレコム復旧作業をしているが、デジセルの国際企業ネットワークが強さを見せた、と言ってもいいかもしれない。

Sorry, I'm really exhausted and missed some amazingly good news: Communications is back in the North!
The Digicel network has been restored through most of the country. I accompanied a plane and helicopter bringing needed gear down to Tanna. It won't be long before the entire country is able to access at least one network again. That's going to make a huge difference to people's lives.
Can I take this moment to remind people that this involves rebuilding several communications towers, replacing and repairing countless antennas and related equipment, all in the course of days... with the wreckage of a CAT5 cyclone all around them.
What Digicel has done is about half a step short of miraculous.
